Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world, more than half of its population lives in poverty without reliable access to food. In the fight against hunger, agriculture plays a critical role. However, the subsistence agriculture that is widespread applied by farmers, makes them extremely vulnerable to the increasing droughts in the country. At UCF we aim to transform the subsistence agriculture to a more sustainable one.
The relevance of sustainable agriculture will only increase in the coming years. Climate change will continue to have an impact on agricultural productivity and stability. In the face of this uncertainty, small producers in Kibuku District are mostly dependent upon rice growing. UCF aims to teach these farmers innovative farm techniques that will help them become more sustainable and self-reliant. This way they are less dependent upon rice farming and are able to transform to a more sustainable way of farming.
